Dedan Kimathi University of Technology has been urged to take advantage of the support it receives to engage the youth to ensure they have a stake in the entire coffee chain.
Nyeri County Executive Committee member for Agriculture said there is a need to support the youth venture in coffee as a business and also transfer technology as the university continues to get support from the European Union and (Kenya Agriculture and Livestock Research Organisation.
“The youth feel left out and this is an opportunity that the university can grab and equip them with the knowledge so that they can start appreciating the aspect of coffee growing,” he said.
He was speaking during the commissioning of the coffee nursery project at the institution’s coffee farm recently.
The CEC said the youth can easily get into the venture by putting up coffee nurseries and ferrying the planting materials reliably after acquiring certificates to indicate that their nurseries are well established and certified.
Mr Thuo called upon farmers to take advantage of the nurseries and acquire clean planting materials.
The university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Paul Wambua, said the nursery has been funded by the European Union through Coffee Research Institute (CRI).
The EU contributed close to Sh3 million while the university contributed over Sh600,000.
He said the nursery has been able to raise about 106,000 coffee seedlings out of which the university has planted 29,000 seedlings in its farm and sold 5000 seedlings to farmers.
“We expect that a lot of farmers from the region will be able to come and purchase the seedlings. They are very good and of very high quality,” he said.
He added that they have stocked the Ruiru 11 and Batian cultivars all supplied from Coffee research Institute.
The director of Coffee Research Institute Elijah Gichuru said the programme brings the number of coffee seedlings programmes to two in the county with the other one being at Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society in Othaya.
