Nyeri government re-launches agricultural extension services

NYERI County Government has re-launched agricultural extension services in bid to increase production and improve local’s livelihoods.
Deputy Governor Samuel Wamathai said three vehicles and 14 motorcycles will be procured to ease mobility of extension agricultural officers in the field.
“I urge all farmers to take advantage of the new extension service approach, and am sure that in partnership with all stakeholders in the sector we shall make agriculture, livestock and fisheries farming a profitable business through strengthening our farmers’ co-operative societies,” said the deputy governor.
Mr Wamathai said this in a speech read on his behalf by Nyeri County Trade CEC Stanley Miano at Wambugu Agriculture Training Centre, Nyeri town during the flagging off of the three vehicles and 14 motorcycles for the extension officers.
He said plans are underway to improve commercial farming by having hubs in sub-counties as well as embracing sustainability in environment.
“My government will enhance appropriate crop and livestock production technologies that are suited for urban areas in order to address food security,” he said.
Mr Wamathai further announced that the County Government has put in placed policies and legislation to manage the agriculture sector.
He said Nyeri County Coffee Bill, if enacted into law, will establish a Coffee Development Fund to provide sustainable and affordable credit and advances to coffee farmers.
“We also have Nyeri County Tea Development Bill, which aims at making the tea industry more competitive and sustainable to, amonG other provisions, improve the returns to tea farmers,” said Wamathai.
He added that the County Rea Cess Bill will look into improvement of the infrastructure in the tea growing areas.
He added that the Nyeri County Livestock Bill will help enhance development and sustainability of all sectors of the livestock industry in the county while the County Agricultural Institutions
