Just a day after a parliamentary select committee was formed to investigate the activities of betting companies, Members of Parliament serving in the committee did not even wait for ink to dry before they could begin their work.
Today, the MPs visited SportPesa offices in Nairobi in what they said execution of the committee’s mandate to investigate the activities of betting companies. This has raised eyebrows on the motive of the committee, which was formed after major lobbying of senior political leaders in the country.
Sources close to the meeting raised questions on the motive behind the probe that began just a day after the committee was formed.
Leader of Majority Adan Dualle and Deputy Leader of Minority Jakoyo Midiwo were appointed to co-lead the team to probe gambling industry in the wake of betting craze in the country.
Other members of the committee are Thomas Mwadengu, Kanini Kega,Benjamin Langat, Samuel Chepkonga, Samuel Gichigi Daniel Maanzo, Mary Keraa,Soipan Tuya and Dorcas Kadego.
SportPesa sponsors the Kenyan Premier League, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. The betting company hit news headlines recently when it announced its sponsorship to England’s Hull City Football Clud.
