Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi intensified his war against Governor Peter Munya when he led a delegation of local leaders, among them Members of County Assemblies where President Uhuru Kenyatta promised a basket of goodies.
At the State House meeting, President Kenyatta announced a Ksh1 billion kitty to cushion miraa farmers against the effect of import ban on the Meru’s main cash crop to major markets in Europe.
While Mr Munya was hosting Cord leaders Raila at the just concluded Devolution Conference, Senator Murungi was busy cutting deals with President Kenyatta at State House.
Today I hosted Meru County leaders at State House. I announced to them a budgetary allocation of Sh. 1 billion to cushion Miraa growers from the challenges brought about by the ban of Miraa in the European markets two years ago,” President Kenyatta said.
The differences between the former political allies turned nemesis came to the fore on Wednesday when a publication loaded with anti Munya content was circulated at the conference while President Kenyatta, who was scheduled to open the conference gave it a wide berth. The majority of senators, and members of National Assembly also skipped the conference.
Senator Murungi is the co-chair of Jubilee Alliance Party of Kenya, President Kenyatta’s re-election vehicle, and has been tipped to be a major player in the 2017 politics.
The differences between the two leaders began when Senator Murungi announced that he will vie for Muru gubernatorial seat come next year election.
According to Senator Murungi, Mr Munya had failed to utilise devolution funds to catalyse development in Meru.
However, insiders say Mr Munya’s predicaments were caused by his strong stand on allocation of more resources to counties.
These, according to Jubilee power brokers, was a sign of disloyalty and gave Mr Odinga ammunition to fire salvos at President Kenyatta.
It was against this backdrop that Mr Munya’s fate was sealed and Senator Murungi, a political kingpin of Meru urged to clip his wings.
